Abstract
In this image of the forty-ninth station, Hiroshige shows the cave shrine of the deity Kannon embedded in and overwhelmed by its natural environment. The shrine is framed by the Kiyo falls, steep cliffs, and dangerous roads traveled by pilgrims.
