Abstract
This image illustrates a group of women performers in Korean guise, playing musical instruments during the Niwaka festival of the Yoshiwara, the pleasure quarters of Edo. Utamaro created numerous other prints with women geisha, under various guises, performing and parading at this festival.

The artist is also known as Utamaro I. His prints of beautiful women and of erotica became very popular and dominated the ukiyo-e market in the 1790s and 1800s. He created a feminine ideal characterized by elongated faces and sensual poses.
