Title
Portrait of Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904)
Abstract
This posthumous portrait of Samuel Putnam Avery, the art dealer, was likely painted from a photograph. He holds in his hand a print after a painting by Rembrandt. New York artist Daniel Huntington was one of the City’s leading portraitists, and Columbia holds many of his portraits of deans and faculty in the University art collection. The donor, Robert W. Macbeth, was an alum of Columbia College, C lass of 1906, and at the time of his donation was the co-owner and president of the Macbeth Gallery at 450 Fifth Ave., famous in its day for having launched the careers of “The Eight,” the Ashcan school of New York artists.
