- Colonel James Anderson opened his own private library in Allegheny, Pennsylvania to factory workers, such as young Andrew Carnegie. He became a life-long inspiration for Andrew, who viewed public libraries as the cornerstone of education and self-improvement. In 1904 Andrew Carnegie donated this bust to the Allegheny Free Library.
