Abstract
Nicholas Murray Butler (1862-1947), was a close friend of Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie attended Butler's inauguration as Columbia University President in 1902, and Butler vacationed in Carnegie's Skibo Castle. Butler was an advocate and one of the original trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. A noted advocate for peace, he served as chairman of the Conferences on In ternational Arbitration, and then became one of the founders of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, its second president, from 1925 to 1945, and a recipient of 1931 Nobel Peace Prize.
