  • Abstract: This booklet was written by Dr. John Ross, the head of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, established in 1903, for the betterment of social conditions in Carnegie's native town. Dr. John Ross also was in charge of the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust, establishe d in 1908, for recognition of heroic acts performed in peaceful walks of life in Great Britain and Ireland. The Hero Fund was modeled after the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, established in the United States in 1904, and was soon followed by Carnegie Hero Funds in France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Italy.

  • Abstract: The Carnegie family in Pittsburgh on the return of Mr. Andrew Carnegie (front row, third from the left) and Mrs. Louise Whitfield Carnegie (front row, second from the left) from California en route to New York. Pittsburgh witnessed Carnegie's meteori c rise from bobbin boy on a cotton mill, to a telegraph operator then to a railroad manager, and finally to a steel industry titan. Over the years many other members of the extended family settled there as well. Andrew Carnegie moved to New York City in 1867, but Pittsburgh has always remained the site of his steel factories, and the recipient of many Carnegie benefactions.

  • Abstract: Prior to 1911 the Carnegie Home Trust functioned as the de-facto predecessor of the Carnegie Corporation, providing funds for various charitable donations. The Company also served as the source from which Franks, according to Carnegie's instructions, distributed Steel bonds to the trustees of various philanthropic trusts started by Carnegie. After Carnegie's death and the settlement of his estate in 1925, Carnegie Corporation of New York administered the Home Trust Company, paying the remaining pensions, and dissolved it in 1973.

  • Abstract: Perhaps the most recognizable legacy of Andrew Carnegie and later, Carnegie Corporation, is the American institution of the free public library. Between 1890 and 1917 Andrew Carnegie and Carnegie Corporation of New York built 2,509 new libraries all over the world, including 1,681 in the Unites States. The recipient communities were required to pass an ordinance, guaranteeing annual tax support for the library operations. Later the Corporation moved from brick and mortar to developing librarianship and library science.

  • Abstract: Carnegie built the free libraries in Braddock (1895), Homestead (1896) and Duquesne (1901) to serve the employees of Carnegie Steel Company mills in those towns, and their families. In the beginning, the local steel mill would subsidize the libraries in Braddock and Homestead. In addition to the libraries, Braddock, Duquesne and Homestead institutions housed “Workingman's Clubs," with gymnasiums, bowling alleys, swimming pools, night school rooms, kindergartens, and assembly halls.

  • Abstract: Distributing the “College Art Sets” and the “College Music Sets” to hundreds of institutions in the United States and British Commonwealth has been one of significant initiatives by the Carnegie Corporation during the 1920s-1930s. The art sets contain ed approximately 200 art history books, 1,500 mounted photographs of architecture, sculpture and painting, and small collections of original prints and textiles, all housed in specially made wood cabinet. The music sets contained an electric phonograph, over 800 records housed in a cabinet, 250 bound scores, and 129 books on musical subjects. The contents varied slightly over the years. More modest art sets were also distributed to secondary schools.

  • Abstract: In 1923 the Endowment purchased a building in Paris to house the Centre Européen. The new building at 173 Boulevard Saint-Germain, an 18th century hotel, contained the Centre's administration offices, lecture rooms, library, and a movie theater. The Centre also rented its rooms for lectures, and let office space to other organizations and individuals. A separate reading room (Salle de Lecture) for current newspapers and other periodicals opened in 1926.

  • Abstract: This ledger contains the minutes for the founding meeting of the Carnegie Home Trust Company. The Company was chartered on Oct. 22, 1901 in Hoboken, NJ. The only purpose of the Carnegie Home Trust Company was to invest, keep, and distribute the mone y for philanthropic activities, as well as distribute money and pensions to relatives, friends, and others as Andrew Carnegie thought appropriate. This was the beginning of Carnegie’s organized or “wholesale” philanthropy.

  • Abstract: The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland was established in 1901, for assistance to students, for expansion of the Scottish universities, and for stimulation of research. The endowment of the Trust on establishment was $10 million, several times larger than the governmental funding of the four Scottish universities at the time. The Trust was accepted, but remained one of the most controversial of all the large Carnegie benefactions. Carnegie was criticized for creating an “academic dictatorship” by his reliance on trustees, and for “pauperization” of the university clientele by providing financial assistance for Scottish students.

  • Abstract: Andrew Carnegie’s first post-retirement project was establishing a pension and relief fund for old or injured employees of the Carnegie Company. In this letter to the Board of Directors he announces a gift of $4,000,000, to be held in trust for this purpose. “I make this first use of surplus wealth upon retiring from business as an acknowledgement of the debt which I owe to the workmen who have contributed so greatly to my success.” The same document also stipulates a separate $1,000,000 endowment for Braddock, Homestead and Duquesne libraries.

  • Abstract: By 1917, the CFAT trustees, after an extensive study, concluded that a pension system paid out of income at no cost to the beneficiary was expensive beyond all estimates and anticipation. In 1917-1918, under an arrangement negotiated by Andrew Carneg ie and the CFAT the CCNY gave $1 million to found the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association of America, an occupation-wide contributory plan, believed by some to embody more closely Carnegie’s original vision of the teachers’ pension plan. The nonprofit stock of the association, now called TIAA-CREF was owned outright by the Corporation until 1938, when it was transferred to an independent board of trustees. CCNY continued to support TIAA with grants until 1957.

  • Abstract: In April 1905, Andrew Carnegie announced the creation of the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching (CFAT), a $10,000,000 pension fund for teachers in institutions of higher education (with additional five million dollars added in 1908 to pro vide pensions for teachers in state colleges). These mounted checks were issued to the Foundation's own executives: H. S. Pritchett, the CFAT president and Charles W. Eliot, the Harvard University President and the first CFAT Board Chairman. The third check is for William T. Harris, the United States Commissioner of Education from 1889 to 1906, and one of the 30 founding members of the Simplified Spelling Board.

  • Abstract: In January 1949 Charles Dollard, president of the Carnegie Corporation, announced that the house and garden would be transferred to the New York School of Social Work through its parent organization, the Community Service Society. The roots of the Ne w York School of Social Work trace to 1898 as a summer course offered by the New York Charity Organization Society. Six years later it was transformed into a graduate program, originally named the New York School of Philanthropy. The name was changed to the New York School of Social Work in 1917.

  • Abstract: In 1895 Louise Carnegie bought the "Birthplace Cottage" as a surprise 60th birthday present for Andrew. After his death, Mrs. Carnegie proposed and funded the erection of a Memorial Treasure House adjoining the Birthplace. Work began in 1925 on the design by architect James Shearer. The linked buildings of the Cottage and Memorial Hall were formally opened on June 28, 1928.
