  • Abstract: This contract between Sigmund Freud and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was signed by Freud and James S. Shotwell, the General Editor of the CEIP seminal 150-volume series Economic and Social History of the World War. In December 1921 Freud informed Shotwell that he "can't make any headway" and asked to be released from the contract. In 1924, as the series was brought to a conclusion, Shotwell became director of the CEIP Division of Economics and History.

As the residual legatee under his will, the Corporation received an additional $10 million when the estate was settled. However he continued to support schools, settlements, self-help societies and other grassroots organizations, particularly in New York City, from his pe rsonal funds. In this letter, Andrew Carnegie' personal secretary John Poynton asks the Corporation to take over some of the grants. Carnegie hired Poynton as a replacement for James Bertram, who spent all of his time administering Carnegie' organized philanthropy.

  • Abstract: This letter, written by the President of the Society of New York Hospital, describes educational activities of the New York Academy of Medicine and its value to New York Hospital, the oldest hospital in New York City (now known as NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center). This letter was written after New York Hospital and Cornell University reached an agreement about using the hospital for teaching purposes, but several years before they agreed on building a joint medical center on East 68th Street. The New York Academy of Medicine, particularly its famous library, was the resource that allowed practicing doctors to keep abreast of changes in their profession.

  • Abstract: The Institute of Economics in Washington, DC was founded with over 1 million dollars in Carnegie Corp. grants in 1922 "for the collection of facts relating to economic questions and for the study and interpretation of these facts for the benefit of th e public". It was proposed by Robert S. Brookings (1850-1932), who, like Andrew Carnegie, achieved business success early in life, and then turned to educational philanthropy. Among other things, Brookings established the Institute for Government Research in 1916 to develop the policy-making capacity at the national level, which became closely affiliated with the Institute of Economics.

Incidentally, Hew Morrison also recommended that Ca rnegie hire James Bertram as a secretary. As shown in this letter, he also participated in designing and choosing Andrew Carnegie's bookplates.

  • Abstract: Distributing the “College Art Sets” and the “College Music Sets” to hundreds of institutions in the United States and British Commonwealth has been one of significant initiatives by the Carnegie Corporation during the 1920s-1930s. The art sets contain ed approximately 200 art history books, 1,500 mounted photographs of architecture, sculpture and painting, and small collections of original prints and textiles, all housed in specially made wood cabinet. The music sets contained an electric phonograph, over 800 records housed in a cabinet, 250 bound scores, and 129 books on musical subjects. The contents varied slightly over the years. More modest art sets were also distributed to secondary schools.

He was the chairman of the National Research Council twice, in 1919-1920 and 1921-1923, and held other prominent positions in numerous scientific organizations. This photograph was taken in his CIW office before his 1938 retirement.

  • Abstract: By 1917, the CFAT trustees, after an extensive study, concluded that a pension system paid out of income at no cost to the beneficiary was expensive beyond all estimates and anticipation. In 1917-1918, under an arrangement negotiated by Andrew Carneg ie and the CFAT the CCNY gave $1 million to found the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association of America, an occupation-wide contributory plan, believed by some to embody more closely Carnegie’s original vision of the teachers’ pension plan. The nonprofit stock of the association, now called TIAA-CREF was owned outright by the Corporation until 1938, when it was transferred to an independent board of trustees. CCNY continued to support TIAA with grants until 1957.

  • Abstract: Carnegie earmarked a portion of the endowment to be used for philanthropic purposes in Canada and what were then the British Colonies. This part of the endowment was first known as the Special Fund, then the British Dominions and Colonies Fund, and la ter the Commonwealth Program. Under the name of the International Program it continued until the early 1980s.

  • Abstract: Andrew Carnegie’s first post-retirement project was establishing a pension and relief fund for old or injured employees of the Carnegie Company. In this letter to the Board of Directors he announces a gift of $4,000,000, to be held in trust for this purpose. “I make this first use of surplus wealth upon retiring from business as an acknowledgement of the debt which I owe to the workmen who have contributed so greatly to my success.” The same document also stipulates a separate $1,000,000 endowment for Braddock, Homestead and Duquesne libraries.

  • Abstract: Andrew Carnegie moved to New York City in 1867. In 1883 he was elected to the Nineteenth Century Club of New York founded by Cortland Palmer, who invited best-known men of letters to speak to his club. Carnegie was invited to be one of the disputant s following the lecture by Thomas Wentworth Higginson critical of the new "Aristocracy of the Dollar." In his autobiography, Carnegie fondly remembered this "first introduction to a New York audience," which he later printed in pamphlet form. In 1886 Carnegie presented his work Triumphant Democracy to the Nineteenth Century Club, but soon resigned from the Club following his verbal attack on Palmer.

He also was a trustee for the Carnegie Institute of Washington, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Carnegie Corporation of New York.
