- Abstract: Following Afrikaner political ascendance in 1951, the Corporation ceased grantmaking in South Africa for more than two decades. The Second Carnegie Inquiry into Poverty and Development in Southern Africa (the first one, focused on the poor white popul ation, was conducted in the 1930s) created to examine the legacies of apartheid and to make recommendations on achieving a democratic, interracial society, was started in the mid-1970s. One of the projects, funded by the Inquiry, this collection of 136 pictures taken by 20 South African photographers poignantly documents the evils of apartheid. It is accompanied by valuable text from presentations made at Carnegie-sponsored 1984 Cape Town conference.

- Abstract: In 1967 the CFAT received a Carnegie Corporation grant to study the various aspects of contemporary higher education. Clark Kerr, then the president of the University of California, agreed to chair the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Over th e course of their existence, the Commission, and its successor organization the Carnegie Council on Policy Studies in Higher Education assembled a wealth of data and published 163 influential monographs, and dozens of pamphlets and brochures.

- Abstract: In January 1949 Charles Dollard, president of the Carnegie Corporation, announced that the house and garden would be transferred to the New York School of Social Work through its parent organization, the Community Service Society. The roots of the Ne w York School of Social Work trace to 1898 as a summer course offered by the New York Charity Organization Society. Six years later it was transformed into a graduate program, originally named the New York School of Philanthropy. The name was changed to the New York School of Social Work in 1917.

- Abstract: After the Second World War the Corporation hired Whitney H. Shepardson as a director for the British Dominion and Colonies Fund. He traveled extensively, and came to the conclusion that the overseas scientists suffered from isolation, being cut off fr om their US and Canadian colleagues by the war and travel expenses. He then revived the program of travel grants on a much broader scale. This is the first volume in a five-volume log of his 1947 trip.

- Abstract: This volume contains listing and brief descriptions of donations to most Carnegie Charities, and other grantees, whose names start with "C" (including Columbia University). Just between 1911 and 1941 Columbia received $3,352,498 in Carnegie Corporat ion grants, making it the third largest Carnegie grantee among the institutions of higher education (after Carnegie-Mellon and Vanderbilt).

- Abstract: John Campbell Merriam (1869 - October 30, 1945) was a leading American paleontologist and the third president of the Carnegie Institution of Washington 1920-1938. He was the chairman of the National Research Council twice, in 1919-1920 and 1921-1923, and held other prominent positions in numerous scientific organizations. This photograph was taken in his CIW office before his 1938 retirement.

- Abstract: Perhaps the most recognizable legacy of Andrew Carnegie and later, Carnegie Corporation, is the American institution of the free public library. Between 1890 and 1917 Andrew Carnegie and Carnegie Corporation of New York built 2,509 new libraries all over the world, including 1,681 in the Unites States. The recipient communities were required to pass an ordinance, guaranteeing annual tax support for the library operations. Later the Corporation moved from brick and mortar to developing librarianship and library science.

- Abstract: Distributing the “College Art Sets” and the “College Music Sets” to hundreds of institutions in the United States and British Commonwealth has been one of significant initiatives by the Carnegie Corporation during the 1920s-1930s. The art sets contain ed approximately 200 art history books, 1,500 mounted photographs of architecture, sculpture and painting, and small collections of original prints and textiles, all housed in specially made wood cabinet. The music sets contained an electric phonograph, over 800 records housed in a cabinet, 250 bound scores, and 129 books on musical subjects. The contents varied slightly over the years. More modest art sets were also distributed to secondary schools.

- Abstract: The overseas program of the Corporation was greatly expanded after Frederick Keppel and James Bertram undertook a trip to Africa in 1927. The travel reports, such as this Keppel's 1935 Report on Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa shown here, not only set forth priorities for the Corporation's grant making but also provided valuable information on the social conditions and the state of education in the region.

- Abstract: This 20th anniversary address to the Corporation was marked as "inaccurate" by Florence Andersen, the Corporation's secretary from 1955 to 1975, and then its first archivist. Henry Pritchett was an original trustee of Carnegie Corporation of New York and its acting president from 1921-23.

- Abstract: James Shotwell was also responsible for the International Relations section of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Founded in New York City in 1923, it became the world's first national coordinating body of the social sciences. Carnegie Cor poration of New York both provided financial support for the Council and used it as an intermediary to channel grants to smaller institutions and individuals.

Nicholas Murray Butler was the most vocal proponent of turning it into a permanent home for all the New York-based philanthropic organizations connected to Andrew Carnegie. - Abstract: By 1917, the CFAT trustees, after an extensive study, concluded that a pension system paid out of income at no cost to the beneficiary was expensive beyond all estimates and anticipation. In 1917-1918, under an arrangement negotiated by Andrew Carneg ie and the CFAT the CCNY gave $1 million to found the Teachers Insurance Annuity Association of America, an occupation-wide contributory plan, believed by some to embody more closely Carnegie’s original vision of the teachers’ pension plan. The nonprofit stock of the association, now called TIAA-CREF was owned outright by the Corporation until 1938, when it was transferred to an independent board of trustees. CCNY continued to support TIAA with grants until 1957.

- Abstract: William P. Merrill, (1867-1954) was acknowledged during his time as one of the most influential ministers in America. In 1911, Merrill became a pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City, attended by the Carnegie family. His 1914 sermon titled "The Making of Peace" was hailed by Andrew Carnegie as one of the greatest sermons on peace that he had ever heard. In 1914 Merrill became the first president of Carnegie's Church Peace Union, currently known as Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs.

- Abstract: The Carnegie Endowment was also involved in librarianship in many ways. It distributed publications to libraries all over the world, supported the American Library in Paris, and was involved in rebuilding libraries destroyed in the First World War. It also opened to the public its own library in Paris, built around Frédéric Passy's library of books on international affairs and law, which the Centre purchased from the Passy estate. Frédéric Passy was the first (1901) winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

- Abstract: This medal and logo was designed for Carnegie Corporation of New York by a prominent American sculptor Paul Howard Manship (1885-1966) Pegasus, the winged mythological horse, is the central figure surrounded by the motto: "Carnegie Corporation for t he Advancement and Diffusion of Knowledge and Understanding."

- Abstract: From 1927 until 1933, the Centre also maintained a Carnegie Lehrstuhl at the Deutsche Hochschule für Politik in Berlin.
