  • Abstract: Prior to 1911 the Carnegie Home Trust functioned as the de-facto predecessor of the Carnegie Corporation, providing funds for various charitable donations. The Company also served as the source from which Franks, according to Carnegie's instructions, distributed Steel bonds to the trustees of various philanthropic trusts started by Carnegie. After Carnegie's death and the settlement of his estate in 1925, Carnegie Corporation of New York administered the Home Trust Company, paying the remaining pensions, and dissolved it in 1973.

  • Abstract: Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Andrew Carnegie came to the United States in 1848 at the age of 12. Andrew, with his parents Margaret and William and his younger brother Tom, settled in Allegheny City, PA, because Margaret Carnegie's sisters had alrea dy been living in the area. This certificate was granted to Andrew Carnegie in New York, upon his presentation of a copy of the 1854 "statement of intention to become a citizen" made by his father William Carnegie to Allegheny County Clerk.

  • Abstract: This contract between Sigmund Freud and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was signed by Freud and James S. Shotwell, the General Editor of the CEIP seminal 150-volume series Economic and Social History of the World War. In December 1921 Freud informed Shotwell that he "can't make any headway" and asked to be released from the contract. In 1924, as the series was brought to a conclusion, Shotwell became director of the CEIP Division of Economics and History.

  • Abstract: After the outbreak of World War I, the Division commissioned a series of studies dealing with topics of immediate importance in connection with the war. This proposal by J.B. Clark presents a plan for the publication of Economic and Social History of the World War. The resulting seminal 150-volume History contained General, American, British, Austrian/Hungarian, Belgian, Bulgarian, Czechoslovak, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Netherland, Polish, Rumanian, Russian, Scandinavian, Serbian, and Turkish series written by eminent scholars from these countries.

  • Abstract: In his will, Carnegie appointed the Home Trust Company (i.e. Robert Franks) is an executor and a trustee. As the residual legatee under his will, the Corporation received an additional $10 million when the estate was settled. Louise Carnegie inherite d most of the real estate, and the responsibility to provide for Margaret: "having years ago made provision for my wife beyond her desires and ample to enable her to provide for our beloved daughter Margaret: and being unable to judge at what provision for our daughter will best promote her happiness, I leave to her mother the duty of providing for her as mother deems best.   • Abstract: In April 1905, Andrew Carnegie announced the creation of the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching (CFAT), a $10,000,000 pension fund for teachers in institutions of higher education (with additional five million dollars added in 1908 to pro vide pensions for teachers in state colleges). These mounted checks were issued to the Foundation's own executives: H. S. Pritchett, the CFAT president and Charles W. Eliot, the Harvard University President and the first CFAT Board Chairman. The third check is for William T. Harris, the United States Commissioner of Education from 1889 to 1906, and one of the 30 founding members of the Simplified Spelling Board.

  • Abstract: In January 1949 Charles Dollard, president of the Carnegie Corporation, announced that the house and garden would be transferred to the New York School of Social Work through its parent organization, the Community Service Society. The roots of the Ne w York School of Social Work trace to 1898 as a summer course offered by the New York Charity Organization Society. Six years later it was transformed into a graduate program, originally named the New York School of Philanthropy. The name was changed to the New York School of Social Work in 1917.

  • Abstract: The Institute of Economics in Washington, DC was founded with over 1 million dollars in Carnegie Corp. grants in 1922 "for the collection of facts relating to economic questions and for the study and interpretation of these facts for the benefit of th e public". It was proposed by Robert S. Brookings (1850-1932), who, like Andrew Carnegie, achieved business success early in life, and then turned to educational philanthropy. Among other things, Brookings established the Institute for Government Research in 1916 to develop the policy-making capacity at the national level, which became closely affiliated with the Institute of Economics.
