  • Abstract: In 1889, Andrew Carnegie wrote "The Gospel of Wealth", in which he asserted that all personal wealth beyond that required to supply the needs of one's family should be regarded as a trust fund to be administered for the benefit of the community. The essay was originally published as "Wealth" in the June 1889 issue of the North American Review.

  • Abstract: Carnegie was a founder of the US Military Telegraph Corps of the Civil War. In 1907, upon request from David Homer Bates, the secretary of the Society of the United States Military Telegraph Corps, he established pensions for them; in a few years he e xtended pensions to their widows as well.
