  • Abstract: Perhaps the most recognizable legacy of Andrew Carnegie and later, Carnegie Corporation, is the American institution of the free public library. Between 1890 and 1917 Andrew Carnegie and Carnegie Corporation of New York built 2,509 new libraries all over the world, including 1,681 in the Unites States. The recipient communities were required to pass an ordinance, guaranteeing annual tax support for the library operations. Later the Corporation moved from brick and mortar to developing librarianship and library science.

  • Abstract: In 1923 the Endowment purchased a building in Paris to house the Centre Européen. The new building at 173 Boulevard Saint-Germain, an 18th century hotel, contained the Centre's administration offices, lecture rooms, library, and a movie theater. The Centre also rented its rooms for lectures, and let office space to other organizations and individuals. A separate reading room (Salle de Lecture) for current newspapers and other periodicals opened in 1926.

  • Abstract: This contract between Sigmund Freud and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was signed by Freud and James S. Shotwell, the General Editor of the CEIP seminal 150-volume series Economic and Social History of the World War. In December 1921 Freud informed Shotwell that he "can't make any headway" and asked to be released from the contract. In 1924, as the series was brought to a conclusion, Shotwell became director of the CEIP Division of Economics and History.

  • Abstract: In their 1920 decision to allocate $100,000 for the building of the Belgrade University Library the CEIP Executive Committee stated: “Mr. Carnegie's name and fame are inseparably associated with his gifts for the construction of libraries in many land s. … It seems therefore peculiarly fitting to erect this library in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia since 1389, where Serbian independence was proclaimed on August 22, 1878, and which was twice captured by the enemy during the Great War, as the gift of the Carnegie Endowment in commemoration of the heroic defense made by the Serbian people.” The library of the Royal University of Belgrade, rebuilt with Carnegie Endowment’s contributions, officially opened its doors on May 24 1926. Today Svetozar Marković University Library is the largest university library in the country.

He devoted most of his life, as he put it, “to the organization of peace,” an d was instrumental in the creation of some of the most important international institutions of the twentieth century, such as the United Nations. He succeeded J.B. Clark as the director of the Division of Economics and History in 1924.

One of the objectives of its Division of International Law was facilitating the study and improving the teaching of international law and related subjects; t hus the Division was instrumental in founding and supporting an Academy of International Law. It also provided financial and administrative support for conferences of teachers of international law and sponsored a series of eight summer sessions on international law for teachers from smaller colleges. This is one of the earliest such sessions held at George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University).
