  • Abstract: The Carnegie family in Pittsburgh on the return of Mr. Andrew Carnegie (front row, third from the left) and Mrs. Louise Whitfield Carnegie (front row, second from the left) from California en route to New York. Pittsburgh witnessed Carnegie's meteori c rise from bobbin boy on a cotton mill, to a telegraph operator then to a railroad manager, and finally to a steel industry titan. Over the years many other members of the extended family settled there as well. Andrew Carnegie moved to New York City in 1867, but Pittsburgh has always remained the site of his steel factories, and the recipient of many Carnegie benefactions.

  • Abstract: Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Andrew Carnegie came to the United States in 1848 at the age of 12. Andrew, with his parents Margaret and William and his younger brother Tom, settled in Allegheny City, PA, because Margaret Carnegie's sisters had alrea dy been living in the area. This certificate was granted to Andrew Carnegie in New York, upon his presentation of a copy of the 1854 "statement of intention to become a citizen" made by his father William Carnegie to Allegheny County Clerk.

  • Abstract: The Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States, was founded on March 15, 1870, by a group of young writers, journalists and critics. In 1909 with financial backing from Andrew Carnegie the Club moved from Fifth Avenue at 21st Street to its new building at 110 West 57th Street, where it remained until entering its present home at 5 East 66th Street in 1947.

  • Abstract: In his will, Carnegie appointed the Home Trust Company (i.e. Robert Franks) is an executor and a trustee. As the residual legatee under his will, the Corporation received an additional $10 million when the estate was settled. Louise Carnegie inherite d most of the real estate, and the responsibility to provide for Margaret: "having years ago made provision for my wife beyond her desires and ample to enable her to provide for our beloved daughter Margaret: and being unable to judge at what provision for our daughter will best promote her happiness, I leave to her mother the duty of providing for her as mother deems best. A mother's love will be the best guide."

  • Abstract: In 1895 Louise Carnegie bought the "Birthplace Cottage" as a surprise 60th birthday present for Andrew. After his death, Mrs. Carnegie proposed and funded the erection of a Memorial Treasure House adjoining the Birthplace. Work began in 1925 on the design by architect James Shearer. The linked buildings of the Cottage and Memorial Hall were formally opened on June 28, 1928.
