1900 A group of Boston attorneys in private practice found the Boston Legal Aid Society (BLAS) to meet the civil legal needs of the poor. Accessed 1 Oct. 2018.] The selection of Mr. Smith to write the report for the Carnegie Foundation on 'Justice and the Poor', was not only a tribute to his own ability and success as a lawyer, organizer and administrator, but also indirectly to the Boston Legal Aid Society. Most of the special knowledge and information which Mr. Smith had acquired was through his connection with this Society. In his treatment of his subject our office has served as an illustration of many principles sought to be explained.
