Rokatar was born on September 25, 1954 in Songo-La Maya, Cuba. His father died when he was seven years old. In 1967, he joined the Red Beret guerrilla. In 1969, he moved to Havana and began military service. He trained as a dairy machinery maintenance mechanic while working for the company Mueble y Envase. He participated in the wars in Angola and Ethiopia. He joined the Young Communist League in 1974 and the Communist Party in 1981. He had two sons. Rokatar was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project
