Abstract
This work of pastoral guidance was written by Johann von Paltz (c. 1445 – 1511), an Augustinian friar and one of Luther’s superiors and (possibly) mentors. He wrote extensively about indulgences in a theologically correct way, but was loyal to the Church. The woodcut shows friars "digging" in the Scriptures for the hidden truths of the Christian faith.
