Oral history interview with Emma Tsui, 2022
Abstract
In the first session, Emma Tsui discusses her relocation to her dad's old house in Falls Church, Virginia and her relationship with New York City. She describes first hearing about the pandemic as a public health practitioner and early conversations with her parents. She discusses the closure of her son's school, the conversations that preceded it, and CUNY's implementation of distance learning. Sh e discusses considerations about returning to New York City, including her husband's martial arts business. In the second session, Tsui talks about the transition from Virginia back to Brooklyn. Much of the session focuses on the protests following the murder of George Floyd, the conversations about race in America that followed, and Tsui's own interrogations of the impact of race on her life. She also discusses her son's education, their routine activities in that juncture of the pandemic, the political situation, and sources of information about the pandemic. In the third session, Emma Tsui reflects on the almost two years that have passed since the second session. She talks about her she has been able to continue her journey to connect with her racial identity through an oral history project on the intersection between health and racial inequality. She details her experience of having had COVID-19. She also provides updates on her parents, her son, and their life in Prospect Heights
