In 2021, Jydin Harwell was a sophomore at Frederick Douglass Academy. She had participated in the Double Discovery Center Program since 2019. Through this program, she participated in college-prep and enrichment courses. Harwell is from the Bronx, but also has a deep connection with Harlem
