Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Andrew Carnegie came to the United States in 1848 at the age of 12. Andrew, with his parents Margaret and William and his younger brother Tom, settled in Allegheny City, PA, because Margaret Carnegie's sisters had already been living in the area. This certificate was granted to Andrew Carnegie in New York, upon his presentation of a copy of the 1854 "statement of in tention to become a citizen" made by his father William Carnegie to Allegheny County Clerk.
