Note
This series, the first among Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series, was occasioned by the artist's journey along the Tōkaidō in the summer of 1832. Accompanying the mission of the shogun, the artist experienced life outside the capital and became familiarized wi th the popular places along this well-traveled road that connected Edo (the capital and today's Tokyo) and Kyoto (the old imperial capital).
