- Abstract
- Oral history interview with Yin Rui, chief editor of the Tibet Daily newspaper (Bod ljongs nyin re'i tshgs par), from 1980-1986. He recounts the founding of the precursor to the Tibet Daily, the Tibet News Brief (Gsar 'gyur mdor bsdus), started by the People's Liberation Army in Lhasa in the early 1950s. YIn Rui describes the arrival of the People's Liberation Army into Tibet in the 1950s, the bat tle of Chamdo and the role of Ngabo Ngawang Jigme (Ch. Apei Awangjinmei), and events in Lhasa in 1959. Yin Rui promoted morale in the army by writing essays. He comments about mistakes in Hu Yaobang's policies, and expresses sympathy for the Dalai Lama. He describes traditional Tibetan society as backwards. Detailed description of 1959, about how the Dalai Lama was asked to visit the army base, but this "was used to stir the people" to resist. He witnessed how Tibetans surrounded the Norbulingka and refused to let the Dalai Lama out. He notes the special role of nuns and monks and the use of religion for "splittist" activities, and discusses otherwise friendly Sino-Tibetan relations. Also includes early photos of Yin Rui with Chinese and Tibetan colleagues; and photos of a 1954 publication issued by the 18th Army, with song lyrics and Chinese language stories about Ganzi (Tib. Dkar mdzes), etc.
