Abstract
The twenty-first image in this series, "Mariko" shows a wintry landscape with few travelers along the main road of this station, known for its tea houses and yam soup. In other versions of this series, Hiroshige depicted the Mariko station in spring, narrowing the visual information to a tea house and a bowl of soup.

Occasioned by Hiroshige's first journey along the Tōkaidō in the summer of 1832, this series is one of more than thirty series in which Hiroshige tackled the popular topic of the fifty-three stations of the well-known and well-traveled road that conne cted Edo and Kyoto.
