Abstract
The book critiques the sociopolitical dynamics embedded in the controversy over James Laine’s book, Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India, highlighting the tension between freedom of subjective expression and cultural authenticity. Theoretically, it draws from anticaste and subaltern perspectives, highlighting how dominant caste narratives distort the emancipatory legacy of historical figures like C hhatrapati Shivaji. It argues that the Bahujan community's struggle for dignity is undermined by state inaction and elite intellectual support for offensive representations. The Satyashodhak movement’s response is positioned as a counter-hegemonic force, reclaiming Bahujan history and demanding institutional accountability.
