- During the 1870s, Henry Ogden Avery and Vermont-born painter Robert Gordon Hardie, Jr. were both students at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Avery left in 1879 to return to New York, and Hardie followed in the early 1880s. This drawing likely relat es to Avery’s departure, based on the inscription.
