Inscribed in lower right: To my friend / Avery / R.G. Hardie Jr. / Paris, March 1879; inscribed on bottom, under mat, illegible instructions in French associated with matting and framing
During the 1870s, Henry Ogden Avery and Vermont-born painter Robert Gordon Hardie, Jr. were both students at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Avery left in 1879 to return to New York, and Hardie followed in the early 1880s. This drawing likely relates to Avery’s departure, based on the inscription.
