Abstract
This series shows images of six rivers of the same name - Tama, literally "jewel" - in various provinces of Japan. Like all prints in the series, this print combines several elements that conform to the modern and elegant atmosphere referred to in the series title as "fūryū": the image of a courtesan holding on to a piece of paper, a poem, presumably inscribed or to be written on the paper she hold s, and a vignette of the Toi River in the Settsu province.

Note
Kikukawa Eizan studied with a minor painter of the Kano School, specialized in ukiyo-e images of beautiful women, and later on abandoned printmaking in favor of painting. The series of "Six Elegant Tama Rivers" was popular among ukiyo-e artists. Eizan himself created several versions, working with Izumiya Ichibei as well as another publisher, Wakasaya Yoichi.
