Oral history interview with Sophia Ford-Glanton, 2021
Abstract
Sophia Ford-Glanton discusses her career in medicine, reflects on her experience of the years of the Obama presidency, and provides details about her written correspondence with President Obama. She recounts her motivations for writing a letter to the President, including her reaction to recent killings of young Black men by police officers, increased understanding of the historical origins of Amer ican policing, and disappointment with Obama's presidency and his comments on racial issues and instances of racist violence. Ford-Glanton also discusses her experiences growing up in California, attending Stanford University, becoming a mother during her medical training, and raising Black children during the Obama years
Sophia Ford-Glanton is a practicing urologist and an assistant professor at the Division of Urologic Surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine at the time of the interview. She earned her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 2002
