Abstract
Early involvement in psychiatry of bleeding disorders and work with Dr. Oscar Ratnoff; parental concerns and coping mechanisms regarding children with hemophilia; involvement with National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and their Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) - first mental health practitioner to serve on that committee; formation of Mental Health Committee of the NHF; first national meeting of this group in 1975; involvement in developing mental health components of federally funding comprehensive care centers; comparison of hemophilia care to care of other chronic diseases; concept of a "hemophilia community" and "communities" surrounding other chronic diseases; Oscar Ratnoff’s caution regarding using pooled lyophilized blood products to treat people with hemophilia; healthy versus unhealthy use of denial among people with hemophilia; "counter-phobia" or risk-taking behaviors in people with hemophilia; similarities and differences in people with hemophilia on home-care versus hospital-based care; the study of family psychiatric therapy for people with hemophilia and their families; acceptance of mental health care as an aspect of comprehensive care and reasons for that acceptance - e.g., leadership personalities and small size of hemophilia community; possible efficacy of hypnosis in treating hemophilia; development of psychiatry as a specialty post-World War II through late 1970s; mental health aspects of the advent of AIDS in hemophilia population; education and risk-reduction efforts regarding HIV and people with hemophilia versus consideration of psychological factors
