Note
This small panel painting is likely a 19th-century copy in homage to a Tudor/Stuart portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh or another man. If the inscription on the painting were original, then this painting would date from ca. 1582, when Sir Walter Raleigh w ould have been thirty years of age. Dealer Charles J. Sawyer suggested to Plimpton that the artist might be Federico Zuccaro (1542-1609), but there is no evidence to support this claim.
