Poster for the University of Louvain Library Fund
Abstract
The Carnegie charities contributed $100,000 to the fund for the reconstruction of the Library of the University of Louvain, destroyed in World War I. The intentional burning down of one of the largest and oldest European libraries by German troops provoked widespread outrage, and prompted an international fundraising drive, spearheaded by U.S. academics.
