Oral history interview with Sarah M.R. "Sally" Jewell, 2020
Abstract
Sally Jewell discusses her formative career experiences leading up to her appointment as secretary of the interior, including her work in resource extraction, banking, and role as CEO at Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI). Jewell compares the experience of working in the public sector to her private sector experience, and discusses the unique difficulties of operating in government. Jewell discusses her contributions to conservation strategy, the White House Council on Native American Affairs, and tribal education. Jewell details the events and decisions surrounding several key infrastructure projects, including the Keystone XL pipeline and Dakota Access Pipeline. Jewell also discusses the evolution of the effort to protect Bears Ears National Monument. More specifically, Jewell comments on her work with the Bears Ears Intertribal Coalition and discusses the nuances of protecting Bears Ears under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Other topics discussed include the rise of anti-government extremism, the implementation of the Clean Power Plan, the Power Plus program, and the Obama administration's multi-species settlement under the Endangered Species Act of 1973

Prior to working in government, she was the COO and, later, CEO, of Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). At the time of the interview, Jewell was an advisor to the College of the Environment's EarthLab at the University of Washington
