Oral history interview with Shania Tatyanna Lind González, 2020
Abstract
In the first session, Lind González recalls her upbringing, which was fraught with familial instability. Her father denied paternity, forcing her single mother to struggle with housing and care. She recalls how she and her sister were placed into foster care. Then, she recalls the confusion and disruption of cycling through various foster homes, as well as the strong bond she maintained with her s ister throughout these upheavals. Lind González also remembers the adoption process.
In the second session, she delves into her life after moving to Puerto Rico, and her experiences at the specialized boarding school, CROEM. She explains her feelings of displacement upon initially arriving in Puerto Rico but eventually recognizes the move as one of the best things to happen to her.
She highlights the contrasts between schooling in New Jersey and Puerto Rico, with her Puerto Rican education seeming less challenging but eventually offering comfort and sense of identity at CROEM.
In the last session, Lind González discusses her journey in understanding and affirming her identity as a lesbian in a conservative, religious household.
En la primera sesión, Lind González recuerda su infancia, plagada de inestabilidad familiar; su padre le negó la paternidad, lo que obligó a su madre soltera a luchar por la vivienda y el cuidado de sus hijos. Recuerda cómo ella y su hermana fueron colocadas en hogares de acogida. Luego recuerda la confusión y el trastorno que supuso pasar de un hogar de acogida a otro, así como el fuerte vínculo que mantuvo con su hermana a lo largo de todas estas vicisitudes. Lind González también recuerda el proceso de adopción.
En la segunda sesión, profundiza en su vida después de trasladarse a Puerto Rico y en sus experiencias en el internado especializado CROEM. Explica sus sentimientos de desplazamiento al llegar a Puerto Rico, pero finalmente reconoce el traslado como una de las mejores cosas que le han pasado.
Destaca los contrastes entre la escolarización en Nueva Jersey y Puerto Rico, con su educación puertorriqueña pareciendo menos desafiante pero ofreciendo finalmente comodidad y sentido de identidad en CROEM.
En la última sesión, Lind González habla de su viaje para comprender y afirmar su identidad como lesbiana en un hogar conservador y religioso.
Shania Tatyanna Lind González was born on February 17, 1999, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Lind González was initially raised by her mother and later lived with her grandparents. Her early years were marked by instability, and at the age of five, she entered foster care due to neglect and abuse. Throughout her childhood, she moved between various foster homes until Maria González, one of her foster mothers, adopted her and her sister after retiring and moving to Puerto Rico. Lind González joined CROEM for high school.
Shania Tatyanna Lind González nació el 17 de febrero de 1999 en Jersey City, Nueva Jersey. Lind González fue criada inicialmente por su madre y más tarde vivió con sus abuelos. Sus primeros años estuvieron marcados por la inestabilidad y, a los cinco años, ingresó en un centro de acogida debido al abandono y los malos tratos. A lo largo de su infancia, pasó por varios hogares de acogida hasta que María González, una de sus madres de acogida, la adoptó a ella y a su hermana tras jubilarse y trasladarse a Puerto Rico. Ingresó en la CROEM para cursar el bachillerato.
