- Abstract
- The Institute of Economics in Washington, DC was founded with over 1 million dollars in Carnegie Corp. grants in 1922 "for the collection of facts relating to economic questions and for the study and interpretation of these facts for the benefit of the public". It was proposed by Robert S. Brookings (1850-1932), who, like Andrew Carnegie, achieved business success early in life, and then turned to educational philanthropy. Among other things, Brookings established the Institute for Government Research in 1916 to develop the policy-making capacity at the national level, which became closely affiliated with the Institute of Economics.
