Three letters in this pamphlet: the first, addressed to "Mons. de Berryer, ministre de la marine, & c", and dated "Montreal, ce 4 avril, 1757", includes a letter addressed to Montcalm, signed S.J. and dated "Boston, Jan. 4, 1757". The second letter to de Berryer is dated "Montreal 1 oct. 1758". The third and last letter, addressed to "Mons. de Molé, premier president au Parlement de Paris", is dated "Du camp devant Quebec, 24 d'août, 1759". The letters, which contain a prophecy of the revolt of the English colonies, are now generally regarded as forgeries.
Three letters, purported to have been written by Louis-Joseph, marquis de Montcalm de Saint-Véran, but definitely not composed and written by this gentleman, and hence a forgery. Authorship, by some authorities, attributed to Pierre Joseph Antoine Ro ubaud, a Jesuit missionary in Canada, who entered the English service after the fall of Quebec. cf. Winsor, Narr. & crit. hist., v. 5, p. 606, and references there given. cf. also, Backer-Sommervogel, Bibl. de la Compagnie de Jésus, t. 7, under Roubaud. According to Staton and Tremaine this is also incorrect; the English version (which differs from the French text)--was composed by an anonymous author, while the French version was possibly prepared by Roubaud.
