Abstract
Bob Kocher reflects on his tenure as special assistant to the president for healthcare and economic policy on the National Economic Council from 2009 to 2010. He begins with a biographical account leading to his time as partner at McKinsey & Company leading the Global Institute on Healthcare Economics. He recounts his experience learning about hospitals around the world and being on President Obama 's economic policy team, paying special attention to the Affordable Care Act. Kocher discusses the effect of the 2008 recession on government, the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the cost of healthcare and the public perception of reform. He details the goals of the Obama administration with healthcare reform, as well as their cooperation with medical groups such as the American Medical Association and with Congress. Kocher also gives insight into the cadillac tax, working with Michelle Obama on Let's Move!, working with the private sector, the Health Data Initiative, and the outcomes of the Affordable Care Act

He was also a partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led the Global Institute on Healthcare Economics. At t he time of the interview, Kocher is a partner at Venrock, adjunct professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, non-resident fellow and advisory board member at the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California, and advisory board member of the National Institute of Health Care Management
