- Early life and family: born in new York, mother's assistance of women in need of illegal abortions in 1920's and 30's, influence of family on career path; education: Radcliff college, where freshman roommate had illegal abortion in 1947; Pre-medical courses at University of Washington; medical school; internship at San Francisco General Hospital; volunteer work at Planned Parenthood; work as genera l practioner; residency obstetrics/gynecology; personal experience with an illegal abortion; assistance for women in raising money through underground referral network for abortions performed in Mexico and Japan; opened a teen clinic in San Francisco; political activism for abortion law reform; work for International Planned Parenthood Federation in Singapore from 1963-1965; began abortion clinic immediately following Roe v. Wade; descriptions of typical patients from the Haight Ashbury district during the 1960's of worst case, of procedures and technology
