Abstract
James Shotwell was also responsible for the International Relations section of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). Founded in New York City in 1923, it became the world's first national coordinating body of the social sciences. Carnegie Corporation of New York both provided financial support for the Council and used it as an intermediary to channel grants to smaller institutions and indi viduals.
