Abstract:
Annotation on back: From: Old Men's Toy Shop AlbumDescription: Box 296 Folder 4 #1594 Jessie Tarbox Beals? From: Old Men's Toy Shop Album Man on right used to illustrate undated leaflet (1916 written on it) about the Old Men's Toy Shop in AICP Publications, Vol. 3, 1913-1916. Caption: Nicholas W., 52. Twenty years ago he lost a leg and for eighteen years worked on a canal boat with a very poor substitute for an artificial leg. His eyesight failed and he could no longer work with safety. Last fall he was sitting in Battery Park one day, with nothing to do and no prospect of anything to do, when someone told him of the Toy Shop. He immediately walked all the way to 50th Street to apply for work. He began work the next morning and has been in the shop since, and, although without experience, he is one of the best painters in the shop. He has no family or friends who can help him.
