Unused 1944 Typed and attached to the copy: WHEN SOCIAL WELFARE WAS YOUNG. An attic apartment in Spring Street in 1884. Rent, $3.50 a month. No water supply except the common hydrant. A widow and two children slept on “a ragged pile of stuff on the floor.” This picture shows conditions that faced social welfare agencies now affiliated with the Greater New York Fund when they began their work. The Fund is now engaged in its 1944 Campaign to obtain from business its vital share of $22,250,00 required by 403 local hospitals, health and welfare agencies.
