Abstract
Received letter from the Marquis de Lafayette concerning information from Mr. Livingston. The reasons for this visit interest Jay and Congress; will continue to correspond with him. Has informed Lafayette of [Jay's] situation at the Spanish court. Minister ordered payment of the $26,000 [of the original $150,000] to Cabarrus in Jay's name; however, no more is coming; Cabarrus refuses any more credi t unless sure that France or Spain will promise to repay him within the year. The French ambassador cannot help monetarily but will write about this to the French court tomorrow. Will try to keep creditors quiet. Not surprised that for lack of a mere 25,000 pounds, the Spanish will allow American credit to be ruined. Has more hope in the French.
