The pleasure in knowing how our affairs improve is increased by the knowledge that we are obeying the commandment to love one another. By conveying the Bible to heathens we promote their happiness in the assurances of divine mercy to man's fallen state. Also the condition of the Church continues to improve. The rise of sects since the Reformation impaired Christian fraternity, but people have becom e more qualified to distinguish truth from error. A clearer understanding of the just limits of authority in Church and State has discouraged zeal which is "not according to Knowledge." The Church also derives unity from the institution of Bible societies which bring different denominations together on common ground. In the early church, Christians were distinguished by their obedience to the commandment to love one another, and it is to be regretted that the conduct of their successors has been lacking in this respect. The will of God must be the cause of the new and unexpected accessions of strength to the cause. We must promote the operation of institutions formed to spread the Gospel. Followers of the "Great Captain" who contribute to his conquests will reap the glories of his triumph.
