- Abstract
- Acknowledges receipt of 8 August, with a copy of a letter [before 7 August 1779] to John Jay from Colonel Sims, and an order of Congress of 7 August. There are many officers of Sims' rank who have the same pretensions as he. Washington thinks it will be difficult to determine where such applications should stop. Washington has already pointed out the possible consequences of compliance with his req uest, but Sims is insistent. Washington regrets that Sims, a good officer, is compelled by circumstances either to resign his commission or make a request inconsistent with public interest. In hand of Richard Kidder Meade.
