Letter signed in hand of Alexander Hamilton. Encloses copy of letter to Wayne of 10 July and Wayne's report on victory at Stony Point. (Enclosures present.) Wayne's conduct there merits Congress's warmest praise. Explains reasons for wanting to take Stony Point. Hopes that Verplanck's Point will fall, too. Attempts were made there, but they failed. Although American gains may not be permanent, heav y losses were inflicted on enemy. British are massing at Stony Point, perhaps for attack on West Point. Lieutenant Colonel Fleury, Major Stewart, Lieutant Gibbons, and Lieutant Knox should be rewarded for their parts in the victory. Washington concurs in rewards Wayne promised his men to excite them to greater exertions. Hopes Congress will not disapprove his conduct.
