Letter signed in the hand of Richard Kidder Meade. Acknowledges receipt of Jay's letter of 10 May. Arrival of a detachment from New York enabled Washington to suspend planned march of Glover's brigade. Has already indicated to New York that state should provide other means of defense. On 12 May, Washington was visited by deputies of the Delaware nation, who presented him with a long memorial which they plan to submit to Congress. Under the circumstances, Washington thought it best to answer them in general but friendly terms and to refer them to Congress for a more specific reply.
