- Abstract
- Letter signed in the hand of Alexander Hamilton. Acknowledges receipt of Jay's letter of 12, 19, and 22 May. Army and militia are presently ill equipped to defend themselves against a predatory enemy. States should be forced to put militias on a respectable footing. Encloses copy (present) of his letter on the subject to General Charles Scott, 25 May. Thinks that southern army must be strengthened. Intelligence indicates that enemy, which has consolidated its forces, has "some important enterprise in contemplation." Therefore Americans should be on their guard.
