- Kempe has delayed answering Jay's letter in order not to catch from the
latter's warmth an indelicacy of expression which he might on reflection think blamable.
Never addressed like this before and thinks it without provocation. Will give an
explanation if desired in proper terms. The occasion did not decree such
warmth.
