Reply to Cobb's letter of 15 November. Pleasure at hearing of success of John Jay's negotiations. Finds reports almost too good to be true--"I am content to find it true with a drawback equal to ten percent." Has always believed British Government has been misled by its agents in U.S. concerning American sentiment toward Britain. Fortunes of "federals " and "Democrats" in Massachusetts.-the Democrats "must certainly be going to the Devil." Sees John Jay's negotiations' success as weapon of Federalists against their political foes;
