Abstract
Congratulates John Jay on arrival in Paris. Wants Jay to write from time to time on progress of peace negotiations. Sees no obstacle to completing treaty with Holland. Will make further proposals later with humility. Thinks he may get loan of $1.5 million, but things are uncertain. Holland has veneration for American cause which Adams likes even though the negotiation has wrecked his health. Englis h intrigue here. No party in England seems to have influence enough to make an advance toward peace. Is Carmichael still at Madrid?
