Title:
Document, 1819 May 01
Abstract:
In accordance with John Jay's recommendation, has written to Evert Van Alen, his agent in America, for a clear and comprehensive view of his proceedings. Encloses a copy of the letter, dated 29 April 1819, expressing great dissatisfaction with Van Alen's conduct and asking for justification or explanation of his actions in the administration of Amherst's business. Has sent a copy of the above to Peter Van Schaack with a letter to the latter, also included. This reprimands Van Schaack for not taking more positive action towards preventing the sale of the land. In particular it questions Judge Benson's opinion that redemption of the land was of "no object" to Amherst. Asks why Jay's suggestions to keep the estate were not followed as they were communicated eleven weeks before the sale. His solicitor has not yet written to Mr. King as had been previously stated. Thanks Jay for his suggestions of 5 September.
