Abstract
John Jay's letter to William Duane of the 20th should remove all difficulties. Congratulates him on his firmness of nerves, demonstrated by his handwriting. Does he think the holy league of Imperial and Royal Confederates will be a second edition of that between the Pope, Philip II of Spain, Catherine de Medici, and the House of guise some hundred yea rs ago? What right have these rulers to dictate to other nations? Wishes all nations could make constitutions as Cooley and temperately as does Massachusetts, which is rather more moderate than New York.
