Abstract
Has not written because of poor health. John Jay cannot appoint the man Hamilton has suggested to the position in question because "my doubts respecting this gentleman are of long standing and arise from circumstances which made deep impression on my mind." M. Neuville's pretensions were too high. Is pleased that both he and Hamilton esteem Fleury. John Jay is undecided about the possibility and th e propriety of forming a connection between him and an American Minister. The probability of John Jay's going abroad is very distant.
