Abstract
Encloses a check from Peter Van Schaack for John Jay's endorsement. Bishop Hobart reports that Lord Grenville spoke in high terms of Jay and asked to be remembered to him. Will tell Mr. Roosevelt of William's proposal which seems to be most prudent. Bankruptcies continue among the merchants, many suffering innocently from the failure of others. It is said a great house has failed at Liverpool and that protested bills amounting to $15 million will be returned to the United States. Personal news.
